Muni University Marks Major MoU Signing with University Colleges Leuven-Limburg (UCLL) of Belgium to Boost Global Research and Innovation

Muni University has reinforced its international academic standing following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University Colleges Leuven-Limburg (UCLL) of Belgium, a partnership aimed at strengthening research collaboration, academic exchange, and community-focused innovation.

The MoU was signed at Muni University’s main campus in Arua, highlighting the institution’s growing profile as a regional centre for applied research and global engagement. The signing ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of Muni University, Prof. Simon AngumaKatrini, and attended by senior management, members of the Faculty of Management Science, and Prof. Saskia Smelts representing UCLL.

Speaking at the event, Prof. AngumaKatrini said the partnership would enhance the research capacity of both institutions while expanding opportunities for staff development. He acknowledged Belgium’s continued support in hosting Muni University lecturers for advanced studies, describing the collaboration as a strategic investment in academic excellence.

Prof. Saskia Smelts said the MoU establishes a framework for student and faculty exchange programmes, joint research and funding proposals, and capacity building initiatives with a focus on youth development, community engagement, and professionalisation. She noted that Muni University’s strong community-based research model aligns well with UCLL’s applied learning approach.

The Dean of the Faculty of Management Science, Dr. Yassin Amandu, described the MoU signing as a milestone in Muni University’s internationalisation agenda, positioning the university for deeper and more impactful global partnerships.

Senior Lecturer Prof. Robert Esuruku said the collaboration would promote mutual engagement in research and community outreach, enabling both universities to jointly address development challenges through evidence-based solutions.

The Dean of Students, Ms. Stella Amandra, said students will benefit through increased research opportunities, international exposure, and academic exchange programmes that enhance graduate competitiveness.

Meanwhile, Prof. Clement Okia, Deputy Director of Research at Muni University, described the MoU as a milestone for the institution’s research portfolio. He invited UCLL students and scholars to participate in joint research within refugee-hosting communities, highlighting Muni University’s work in skills development, livelihoods research, and community resilience.

The partnership underscores Muni University’s commitment to becoming a globally connected, research-driven institution delivering solutions to both local and international development priorities.
