Muni University has officially concluded the admission and orientation of its 2,815 newly admitted students for the 2026/2027 Academic Year, marking another significant milestone in the remarkable growth of the only public university in Uganda's West Nile sub-region.
From 84 Students to 2,815
Established in 2013, Muni University was created to respond to the long-standing need for expanded access to quality university education in West Nile and the wider north-western Uganda. The University began its journey with just one Faculty of Technoscience and an inaugural cohort of 84 students, under the leadership of its founding Vice Chancellor, the late Professor Christine Dranzoa.
From those modest beginnings, Muni University has grown into a major centre of higher education, research, innovation and community transformation in the region. Over the years, thousands of graduates have passed through its gates, contributing their knowledge and skills to communities, institutions, businesses and public service across Uganda and beyond.
The University's growth has been reflected not only in its expanding academic portfolio and institutional infrastructure, but also in the increasing number of students it is able to serve. For the 2026/2027 Academic Year, Muni University has expanded its admission capacity to 2,815 students, a remarkable progression from the institution's beginnings with its first cohort of 84 students.
This transformation has positioned Muni University as an important academic anchor for West Nile, opening opportunities for young people who previously had to travel outside the region to access university education. Its evolution over just over a decade has made it a significant contributor to the region's human capital development, with its graduates increasingly participating in professional practice, research, entrepreneurship, public service and community development.
A Growing Academic Community
The latest cohort of 2,815 newly admitted students comprises 321 Higher Education Certificate students, 2,056 undergraduate students and 438 graduate students, admitted across the University's six faculties: Education, Science, Management Sciences, Public Health, Agriculture and Environment, and Technoscience.
The impressive intake reflects Muni University's expanding academic portfolio and growing reputation as a destination for quality higher education.
Coordinated by the Office of the Academic Registrar together with the Office of the Dean of Students, with guidance from the University Legal Officer, the admission and orientation programme brought together University leaders, academic staff, administrative departments and student support units to prepare freshers for a successful transition into university life.
University Leaders Welcome and Guide New Students
Representing the Deans of Faculties, Dr. Yassin Mandu, who also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, welcomed the University's newest students and encouraged them to view their admission as the beginning of a life-changing journey.
He challenged the freshers to think beyond their years at university and reflect on the kind of professionals, leaders, employers, researchers and responsible citizens they aspire to become over the next five to ten years.
He reminded them that the choices they make during their time at Muni University will shape their future and determine the impact they make on society.
The admission ceremony was formally presided over by the University Legal Officer, Mr. Samuel Ondoma, who guided students through their obligations under the Students' Code of Conduct, the Guild Constitution and the University's statutes.
He called upon the freshers to commit themselves to disciplined learning, responsible conduct and adherence to the University's academic and institutional regulations.
Following the legal formalities, Academic Registrar Mr. Felix Opio, acting under the authority delegated by the
Vice Chancellor, officially presented the qualified students from the different faculties for admission before they were formally admitted into Muni University to pursue knowledge, innovation and academic excellence.
Welcoming the new students into the Muni University family, Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Simon Anguma Katrini congratulated the freshers on earning their place at the University and urged them to pursue excellence with discipline, integrity and purpose.
He encouraged students to seek guidance whenever they encounter challenges and reminded them that the University's leadership, lecturers, counsellors, Guild leadership and support staff remain committed to helping every student succeed academically and personally.
He challenged the new entrants to work hard, earn quality degrees and aspire to become researchers, innovators, professionals and national leaders who will contribute meaningfully to Uganda's development.
He further cautioned students against early boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, saying that such relationships could distract them from their academic goals.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Jacob Agea, described admission into Muni University as both a privilege and a responsibility.
He encouraged students to respect themselves, their lecturers and fellow learners while embracing effective time management, hard work and academic discipline.
He further cautioned against plagiarism and all forms of academic dishonesty, describing them as serious offences that undermine academic integrity both at Muni University and across universities worldwide.
He also encouraged students to participate in sports and co-curricular activities, noting that holistic development is an important part of the University's educational philosophy.
Orientation Prepares Students for University Life
The Dean of Students, Madam Stella Amandra, said the orientation programme provided freshers with valuable guidance on adapting to university life, building positive character and pursuing academic excellence.
Addressing the new students, Madam Stella encouraged them to embrace self-respect, effective time management, respect for lecturers and fellow students, and active participation in University programmes.
She emphasised that discipline, responsibility and a positive mindset are essential foundations for becoming well-rounded graduates and future leaders.
The freshers now join a dynamic institution dedicated to nurturing talent through academic excellence, hands-on learning, innovation, impactful research and community transformation.
Beyond the admission ceremony, the Freshers' Orientation Programme introduced students to the academic, personal and support systems that will guide them throughout their university journey.
According to the Dean of Students, Madam Stella Amandra, the large number of admitted students required the orientation to be conducted in phases to ensure that every fresher received adequate attention and support.

Addressing the new students, she encouraged them to embrace self-respect, effective time management, respect for lecturers and fellow students, and active participation in University programmes.

Academic and Digital Orientation Equips Freshers for Success
Facilitated by the Office of the Academic Registrar in collaboration with the ICT Department, the academic and digital orientation equipped students with practical knowledge to confidently navigate university life from their first semester.
The Academic Registrar, Mr. Opio Felix, together with the Deputy Academic Registrar, Mr. Nicholas Tumwebaze, guided students through the University's academic framework, highlighting the role of the Academic Registrar's Office in supporting learners from admission through to graduation.
Students were introduced to key academic policies, admission pathways, programme regulations and the institutional support available to them whenever they require academic guidance. The orientation also provided clarity on programme transfer guidelines and the allocation of government sponsorship opportunities under the national merit and district quota schemes, enabling students to begin their studies with a clear understanding of the University's academic regulations.
Recognising the growing importance of digital literacy in higher education, the ICT Department also took students through the University's online portal, demonstrating how it provides access to course registration, academic records, assessments and other essential learning resources.
The interactive session concluded with a question-and-answer engagement, giving students an opportunity to seek clarification on academic and ICT-related matters.
Throughout the programme, students also interacted with the Office of the Academic Registrar, Dean of Students' Office, Communication Department, University Health Unit, Counselling Unit, RETI and other key service departments.
They participated in guided campus tours, visiting lecture rooms, computer laboratories, the University Library and other learning facilities to familiarise themselves with their new academic environment.
Students also received guidance from Rev. Fr. Pius Kafeero of the Muni University Catholic Community, who encouraged them to cultivate discipline, integrity, respect for cultural diversity and responsible decision-making. He emphasised that university education should shape not only knowledge but also character.
Safeguarding and Inclusion
Sessions facilitated through the Refugee and Host Community Youth Empowerment and Transformation Initiative (RETI) introduced freshers to the University's gender and safeguarding framework.
Mr. William Ejoyi, RETI Program Manager, was among those involved in the orientation sessions, which promoted a campus culture founded on mutual respect and inclusion.
Students were sensitised to the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful university environment, with emphasis on zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, exploitation, bullying and abuse.
By combining academic guidance, digital literacy, personal development and safeguarding awareness, the orientation programme provided freshers with a comprehensive foundation for university life.
The programme reinforced Muni University's commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates by equipping students with the knowledge, guidance and support they need to navigate university successfully.
