Vice Chancellor
A physicist specialising in solar energy and atmospheric physics, Vice Chancellor of Muni University since September 2023 and Chairperson of Senate.
Associate Professor Simon Anguma Katrini is a Ugandan physicist and academic administrator. He was appointed Vice Chancellor of Muni University for a substantive five-year term on 1 September 2023, after serving for a year as acting Vice Chancellor following the passing of the founding Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christine Dranzoa.
He joined Muni University in 2015 as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs). Before that he spent 17 years at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), where he served as Head of the Department of Physics, Associate Dean and then Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Research
Prof. Anguma holds a Master of Science in Physics, specialising in nuclear radiation physics, and a PhD in Physics, specialising in solar energy physics. His research focuses on atmospheric physics: he co-authored a 2014 study of the ionosphere's response to the solar eclipse of 3 November 2013, which analysed Total Electron Content (TEC) from GPS stations across East Africa. He is a leader in the East African Astronomical Society and has supervised many master's and PhD students.
Leading the University
Under his leadership the University has grown to more than 3,000 students and plans to reach 100 programmes, 10 faculties and 7,000 students within five years. In February 2026 he oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Housing and Construction Company to build student hostels, lecture rooms and science laboratories, because Government funding covers only non-residential buildings.
Muni University must lead in research, and that leadership begins with you, our students.
